Jeff Chandler (1918 – 1961) actor, singer.

Ira Grossel was raised by a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. He grew to be 6'4"/1.93 m. His hair started to grey at age 18.

After service in the Second World War, he became a rugged star, as Jeff Chandler, in westerns and other action films. He was often cast as aboriginals, and played the Apache Cochise in three films. He was also a singer, releasing several LPs and playing nightclubs.

He was married from 1946-52, and had two daughters.

He was apparently, and despite his height, a transvestite in his private life. His engagement to Esther Williams was broken off when she discovered his hobby. She revealed this in her 1999 autobiography.

Chandler died at age 42 from blood poisoning after surgery, which was deemed malpractice when his family later sued.

*Not the boxer, nor the American Football player.

No way!, Nobody in Hollywood believed Jeff Chandler was a tranvestite. We have only E.W.'s word for it. It's more than likely it was an acid fuelled vision.

You make it sound as if there is something unusual or undesirable about being a transvestite.

No way! Jeff Chandler a transvestite? Give, me a break. Just, another celebrity try to sensationalize their book to increase sales with lies and and no validation whatsoever!! By,the way it was not blood poisoning that took Mr. Chandler's life, it was from complications from an ulcerated disk surgery which went bad, an artery in his back got nicked during surgery, Chandler lost a great amount of blood which required 55 pints of blood to be transfused, he never recovered and died from the surgical complications.

I knew Jeff Chandler, he was a friend of the family, and my personal friend. There is no way that he was a transvestite, and EW admitted that she thought it would increase her book sales... all you could say about EW was that she could swim ... other than that she was a tart, and it showed. Attacking those who have passed is truly a disgrace, and a lot of people agree with me.

Given your transphobia, he would have kept that side of himself quiet. Esther Williams has passed, and I see that you are attacking her. So does that make you a disgrace?

I know some trans dressers and their wives don't even know they do that. They dress like women and go out two bars and hang out. I'm not sure what the difference is between a trans dresser and a transvestite maybe they're the same but I talk to these men and they said they're all married they just like dressing up like women going out.
